This past week I read the latest highly-acclaimed book by Roger Rosenblatt, The Book of Love: Improvisations on a Crazy Little Thing.
As with all of his books, The Book of Love is filled with short passages that, like jazz riffs, zoom in on an idea and take us in any number of directions. In this case, however, Rosenblatt guides us through his prose using lines from famous, and not so famous, songs from across the years.
It is a quick-paced read and I enjoyed it that much more because I have had the good fortune to study with Rosenblatt and love his sharp wit and sparse writing style. This book is somehow at once thoughtful and whimsical, playful and heartfelt; it is a glimpse into the heart of a life well-lived.
The Book of Love has already received high praise so you probably don’t need mine to convince you to add this to yourlist, but I’ll just say that I enjoyed it tremendously and hope you will, as well, should you find the occasion to read it. Here’s to that crazy little thing called love!
